I've spent my life working as a traveling musician. Along the way, I've met some interesting people and seen some indescribable things. Although my books are works of fiction, they are based on real people I've met and the amazing places I've been.

In my 20's and 30's, with my beautiful wife Dana by my side, we performed in or traveled through all 50 of the United States. After that, we traveled and performed literally around the world...

We've walked the tiny winding streets of Zanzibar off the east coast of Africa; jogged the snow packed streets of Juneau, Alaska; ran through the back alleys of Hong Kong, China; and whisked through the crowded streets of Cochin, India in the back of a three-wheeled scooter taxi on the way to see a twenty-five hundred year old Buddhist temple.
We've ridden a train through the beautiful countryside of Sri Lanka and rode on the back of an elephant in Candidasa; scuba dived an ancient sunken ship off the island of Bali; bought hand painted silk art on the streets of Bombay, India and strolled along the breathtakingly beautiful beaches of the Seychelle Islands that some believe was the Garden Of Eden.
We've stood in the center of Tiananmen Square and walked the ancient paths through the Forbidden City in Beijing, China.
Also, we’ve traded tequila shots with Hank Williams Jr. in the back of his million-dollar tour bus, got a contact high in Willie’s, smoked cigars in Waylon's and actually lent my Cadillac for two days to Kenny Rogers.
We have performed my original songs to crowds of hundreds, to crowds of thousands, and even over thirty thousand once, backed up by the Jackson Symphony Orchestra.
And most importantly, we are personal friends of Mickey Mouse.

The power of relationships is a key theme that is threaded throughout the text-- love for close friends, parents, siblings, spouses. Messages of overcoming challenges, believing in oneself, and discovering what's important in life throughout the passage of time and through firsthand life experience. Ben is so likable with his honesty in moments like the following- as he likens himself to his brother Ron: "somewhere along the way he became too serious" (p. 12). A thought-provoking statement, isn't it? One of my favorite quotations from the book is when Ben recalls his father's advice, "Life is short and a hell of lot harder to live when you're dragging old negative baggage behind you" (p. 100). Messages about building a business "from scratch" and learning by "watching" and "a lot of trial and error" (p. 142). This text speaks to us all when Ben inspires us to follow our passions, because there's "more to life than just making money" (p. 219). The humorous parts, the tender parts, the parts that makes us connect.... it's all here. A must-read!

How often as we grow older, do we occasionally stop and a take a minute to reflect on our life? Then you run across a writer like Ben, who openly and with brutal honesty, tells of his life and all of the very highs and lows and his love of God that has never waivered through it all. A must read, a book for everyone that believes that life is one beautiful journey as long as you keep your faith.
The life of a career musician is never as easy as most people think. This is a biographical account of the ups and downs of the music industry. I couldn't put it down after I started reading this riveting story of the life of the author. You will not regret spending an afternoon with this book.
Knowing that this book is the real life of the author makes it even more intriguing than if it were sheer fiction. In fact, in my opinion, it would be quite difficult to make up all the ups and downs, twists and turns in this Author's life.
A very interesting read. The manner in which the author presents "Lyrics" has you enjoying every minute. Oh, there are sad moments but it wouldn't be real life without them. To see the extent of the author's ingenious talent as a writer and also as a great musician makes you wonder, why isn't he World Renowned?
Is it just that we have too much politics in every avenue of life?
I recommend very highly the reading of Lyrics of My Life, not only to enjoy an excellent book, but how it makes you think about how we are all manipulated or controlled in this world. Such a great read!
I think this was a freebie obtained by reading Sing Roses for Me. It doesn't seem as if the other reviewers looked at the writing with a critical eye. There were so many typos "brake through", "..., Every" (Should be lower case), "vice-principles" instead of vice-principals. I agree that he relates some interesting stories, but the editing was horrendous! Some of the book felt self-aggrandizing. Amazing that I had never heard of Ben Marney in my 60+ years.

I am nearly through reading this book and have totally enjoyed reading it. Love the background stories that Mr. Marney tells as to how his career started. Enjoy the stories of his family life and then his stories of him being married to Dana Damron. Which she is a hometown girl that I grew up with in the small Texas town of Muleshoe!!! I didn't know that Dana had become so successful and it sounds like her and Mr. Marney have had an enjoyable life together!!!
As a teenager in 1980, I had a fake ID to get into the hottest nightclub in Jackson, MS, called MARNEYS. I later became an employee. This book brought back so many memories of that era. I have often wondered about the Ben & Dana Marney "beginnings" & the gaps in between their time in Jackson. The book was so well written, & it played like a movie in my head. Only very good writers do that for me. The reader can also go to Ben's YouTube channel to get a "visual" of Ben, Dana, Sharon AND the music video of "The Mirror".
"Sing Roses For Me" - Ben's first novel - is outstanding! Can't wait to read "Children of the Band"....I'm on pins & needles!!!!
