"In this book there is one poem for every card in a Tarot deck," Joseph Mailander notes in his preface to "The Paris Tarot." The poems were written over a six year stretch of time in which the poet dealt with one every lunar month, and one additional poem each year.
The poems draw from place as well as time "Early on, as I wrote these poems, I discovered that my own small but robust experience of the city of Paris became far more important to them than I contemplated when conceiving this suite....Further, there is a famous Tarot deck from 17th century that has come to be known as 'Tarot de Paris,' certainly a favorite of mine."
The author also notes a debt to orientating the poems around celestial measures, especially lunar months. "Conceiving this suite of poems, I allowed the old world concept of cosmic orientation—a facet of existence we routinely acknowledge as essential wisdom for architects, landscapers, farmers, scientists, spiritualists, yet not so much for poets—to influence the proceedings as much as possible."
While the poems are especially relelvant to Tarot readers and querents alike, the author does not presume nor project any degree of devotion to Tarot, nor even of knowledge of the deck or the tradition of reading cards. "I would not ask you to read this particular collection, nor any portion of it, while nurturing special hopes of divining anything about your life, your future, or even your past; no, I would instead invite you to engage every book you read with those intentions," Mailander adds in the preface.

Dreamily ethereal and at times downright magical, these poems are not meant to divine as tarot cards will, but rather to inform readers through Mr. Mailander's years-long practice of drawing a tarot card a month and crafting magic (through poetry) from the act.
